Magic Square no 1 (4 x 4)


I created this puzzle using a C program, which I wrote myself, and the UNIX / Linux cat and grep commands.

Place numbers in the empty squares until the grid contains each of the numbers 1 to 16 exactly once. The sum of each row, column and diagonal must be the same.

This puzzle has a Hodoku grade of 640. I double-checked it at sudoku9x9.com which solved it using naked singles, hidden singles, one naked pair and one use of Nishio. I cannot claim that I would have spotted this myself but once I saw the explanation it was easy to follow:

Add the 25 letters between A and Y to the grid above. Each one should appear exactly once. When you have finished, you must be able to spell the following words moving horizontally, vertically or diagonally around the grid:

BAROQUE, BUG, CARIBOU, CHAP, CITY, FEUD, JOB, KINDLY, SMIRK, VEX, WORK.
